ABOUT US WHY I CARE? Being the world leader in poverty reduction, despite China’s strong and sustained economic growth, poverty is still widespread, especially in remote rural areas. By 2006, there were 21.48 million rural poor still facing shortages of food and clothing, and 35.5 million low-income earners. The poor population accounts for 6 percent of the population in rural areas and 13.7 percent in the western regions. About 100 million Chinese, mainly in the rural areas, continue to survive on less than US$1 a day. They fall into two main categories - the poor and the marginalized children. The poorest people live in harsh ecological conditions, mostly in remote areas, where natural resources are scarce and public services are less available. The problems become even more acute, affected by rising disasters caused by climatic change. Half of arable land in China is often affected by natural disasters. All these natural calamities such as drought, flood and hailstorms has caused devastation of thousands of homes resulting in high unemployment, water and food shortages, homelessness, and so many children growing up without basic education. I CARE exists because our conviction is that "Every Life Matters". This means that every unwanted, abandoned child matters as well as every member of a struggling family in a needy community. |
